As a young boy raised in a Christian home in Ghana, I remember my dad leading us in our daily prayer and devotion. My dad was not only a godly man who loved the Lord, but he was also a man who enjoyed the life and blessings God gave him. He was a man who liked to look good, maybe not over the top good, but ensured his appearance was decent and smart. As a teenager, I noticed an aftershave he had bought. It had a strong pleasant smell to it. When he had it on, you knew where he had been because the fragrance lingered a while even after he had gone. So unique was the smell that after a while, we associated it with him.
As Christians, the Bible says, “But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing”. 2 Corinthians 2:14-15.
Similar to how we can put on a perfume or aftershave, I would encourage you to put on Christ. Let Him be that fragrance that follows you wherever you go. May you bring God’s pleasant smell of the Gospel of peace and hope to the despair. May the fragrance of the love of Christ and the grace of God follow you to places where love and mercy is needed. In a spiritual environment of filth and pong, may your presence bring the sweet fragrance of Heaven. Although you may be so aware of your sins and struggles in faith, be delighted to know that as a child of God, your Father has drenched you in the fragrance of Christ. Live in that fragrance and bring it to others. Be encouraged!
