Today, the 14th of February, also known as Valentine’s day is a day when society encourages (or actually pressures) us into going out of our way to express our ‘love’ for that special person in our life. It is a day of no excuses but action. A day when it is somewhat demanded by right that you express some form of affection, no matter how shallow or pretentious it may be. 🙂 It is a day when marriages on its last legs are given new life to hope and love again. Where intimacy that was growing cold is kindled by the efforts the day demands.

On the other hand, it is also a day when lust disguises itself as love and it is glorified all throughout the land. A day where the temptation of a one night stand is somewhat more appealing than singleness or chastity. Sadly, it is also a day when our pressured vulnerable teenagers seem to have no reason to say NO, and are then led on a dark path of regret and heartbreak. For most people, the feeling of loneliness is so intensified on this day because it appears everyone else has someone except them.

The truth is, Love is much broader and deeper than what is often expressed on Valentine’s Day. True love should think of itself less and more of others. It should think of the weak, the vulnerable, the lonely and afflicted. It should think not of what I will get from doing this, but rather from the joy it gives the other person/people. Love should think of those who matter the most to us, but equally, of those forgotten by us.

On this special day, let us be discerning in celebrating the multidimensional nature of true love; the Love of God that transforms us to love our neighbour as ourselves. “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God” (1 John 4:7).

Be encouraged, and do spend time with someone. Call someone. If you prefer to be alone, enjoy your own company, but do not be pressured into a feeling of taking an action you will regret. It is only a day, and some consequences are not worth going through because of decisions made as encouraged by this day. Be blessed!

Yours in Christ,
