Switch on the tele and change the channel to any news station and you will be flooded with depressing news around the world. It seems like the news channels thrive on bad news, but actually it also indicates how broken our world really is.
Years ago, we were promised that capitalism, globalisation and consumerism will bring us more happiness and joy. And although we may consider ourselves more privileged than our fore-parents, it appears that the more convenient our lives become, the more stressful, the more lonely and depressed society is. What was meant to bring us happiness, security and independence, seems to have fallen short in many areas. To simply put it; our world is broken and it’s really in need of a Saviour.
In John 16:33, Jesus said to his disciples, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
In Christ alone do we have such peace in the midst of a broken world. In Him alone do we have a counsellor who instructs us in the way of peace and joy. In Christ alone can we find rest and assuredness for tomorrow. Fix your eyes on Him again, and perceive the eternal hope and joy you were called to.
