It is often said that actions speak louder than words. This is true because the end product of everything we have is as a result of someone’s actions. However, actions are often influenced by written words or spoken words.
As humans, we are not only shaped by the environment we live in, we are also shaped by the words spoken into our lives. In our houses, we use words and some form of action to encourage or discourage the behaviour of our children. In our schools, words are used to shape the thinking of students, possessing in it the power to carve out a desirable future for them. It is believed that the words of a stranger accusing the Jews for society’s problems shaped and changed the whole outlook of young Adolf Hitler’s life, birthing an ideology that justified horrendous atrocities in the Nazi regime.
The writer of Proverbs simply puts it this way, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits” (Proverbs 18:21). Words can motivate the despair to hope again, and it can also discourage the joyful in their mood of happiness. Let us use our words rightly; and let us be discerning in the words we allow to take root in us. Today, if you are a victim of cruel words that have broken you in any way, remember that there is a higher truth in God’s word spoken over your life. As a Christian, you must not subject yourself under the ill-spoken words of men; look above it and align yourself to the truth of God’s word concerning you. Be encouraged!
