A few days ago, I saw a Carphone Warehouse advert on tele; and although it was funny, it had some core truth to it. The advert was simply urging customers to ask for an upgrade! In it, the main character said, “if you don’t ask, you don’t get!” View advert on YouTube – (

Some of you may be wondering how this relates to the Christian life. Well, Jesus encourages us to ask when he said, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8).

  • Are you feeling down and depressed and in need of joy? Ask the Lord to shine His light that breaks through the darkness.
  • Are you lonely and in need of a friend or a partner? Ask the Lord to bring someone who you can share your life with.
  • Are you burdened with sin and in need of a transformed life? Ask Jesus to break the shackles off and set you free from sin.

We often grow weary of asking because we may not have received answers to some past prayers; but in spite of that, we are encouraged to ask. On the topic of asking, Jesus said again, “…Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:24). On the other hand, James said, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” (James 4:3). While we are encouraged to ask, it is also clear that our motive for asking could determine if we will receive that which we asked for. God is clearly not in the ‘name it and claim it’ business, but He sure is in the business of answering prayers according to His sovereign will and purpose. Try again, go to your Heavenly Father in prayer and ask that your joy may be full.
