Black Friday and Sunny Sunday – Newsletter 29 Nov 2014

Black Friday – So we have just survived Black Friday! For those of you who haven’t seen on the TV or web, on Friday Black Friday hit the UK. Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States (the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. It has now become a phenomena of retail life in the UK as websites crashed and Tesco saw Police arrive to control the eager crowds looking for a bargain.

The Gift – We have a number of friends employed in the retail and catering business in our church family so our prayers are with you as you recover from this! There will also be some people who got the bargain they needed. One of my reactions was also sorrow that so many people could be so desperate to queue up at a minute after midnight to get a cheap TV … but don’t see the Gift of a new life through faith in Jesus that is held out from heaven:

Isaiah 9:6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Roger – On Thursday evening this week I was invited to the retirement do of a good friend of mine called Roger at function room overlooking St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Over the years I had shared my friendship and faith with Roger and then a few years ago whilst we were at a book launch in the basement and cellars of St Paul’s. Roger surprised me and said that he wanted to give his life to the Lord. There among all the suits and posh frocks, and with a simple prayer of faith, Roger gave his life to the Lord. He has never looked back and is now fully engaged with his local inner city Birmingham Church and has also just become the Treasurer of a charity for disabled in the Midlands. His life has changed and he is more at peace and a much happier person.

Black Friday can provide a shopping bargain…but in this Advent(Arrival) time you and I can do something that will be of eternal worth..share the good news of Jesus with our friends and contacts.

Love from David
